The Film Classification Board is established under the Films Act of 2002 and Films Regulations 2009 as well the Stage Plays Act of 1951.

Its functions are to classify films, publicity materials and stage plays that are meant for public exhibition. In addition, the Film Classification. Board also undertakes clearance exercise at point of entry (seaport/airport) for imported movies prior to their classification.
